Tokyo to Kanazawa uses the Hokuriku Shinkansen corridor. Search from Tokyo or an applicable northern interchange to Kanazawa and compare the actual departure for your travel date. Choose the right stations
The Hokuriku Shinkansen leaves Tokyo toward Omiya, Nagano and Toyama before reaching Kanazawa. It is a different corridor from the Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto and Osaka. Shinagawa is not a Hokuriku Shinkansen boarding station.
Kanazawa is no longer the end of the Hokuriku Shinkansen: the line extends to Tsuruga. Check the destination and stops because a train continuing beyond Kanazawa can still be suitable. For an onward trip toward Kyoto or Osaka, compare the current Tsuruga connection rather than relying on pre-extension direct Thunderbird advice.
Which train should you book?
Kagayaki is an all-reserved service. Reserve the correct seat and departure. Hakutaka makes more stops and may suit intermediate destinations or a different schedule. Confirm the train calls at your intended boarding station, including Ueno if you plan to use it.
Ordinary Car, Green Car and GranClass are different products. GranClass service levels depend on the train, so a premium seat does not guarantee every food or attendant service. The Tokaido/Sanyo oversized-baggage seat system should not be copied onto this route; check JR East's storage and baggage guidance for the actual train.
Ticket prices and what the total includes
A complete Shinkansen journey requires the base fare and the relevant limited-express entitlement. Reserved seating, train category, premium class and the railway calendar can change the amount. Review any separately displayed booking fee and the currency before payment. A price copied from a previous year or converted to dollars is not a current offer.
Use the fare breakdown to compare like-for-like totals. Check the conditions for changes, cancellations and missed departures; flexibility depends on the product you purchase.
Seats, busy dates and luggage
Kagayaki has reserved seats only. For other service types, check the reservation options shown for the exact train rather than assuming there is a non-reserved carriage.
Check JR East's baggage limits and the storage facilities on your train. Keep aisles clear and do not assume the oversized-baggage seat system used on Tokaido services applies to the Hokuriku line.
For adjacent seats, accessibility needs or a particular window, check availability before paying. A preference is not a confirmed allocation until the issued reservation identifies it. Read the seat-class guide for layout differences.
