Choose the right stations

Hiroshima Station serves the Shinkansen. It is separate from the Peace Memorial Park area, so include the local transfer from your accommodation. Check the correct entrance, lift route and departure display before proceeding through the high-speed gate.

Choose Tokyo or Shinagawa according to your onward destination and the stops of your train. Shinagawa can simplify a southern Tokyo or Haneda connection; Tokyo Station serves many central, eastern and northern connections. Do not book a departure time based only on the city name.

Which train should you book?

A direct Nozomi avoids changing trains at Shin-Osaka. Other itineraries may combine a Sanyo service with a Tokaido train, adding a transfer and potentially a longer overall journey. Compare the total itinerary, not only the running time of one segment.

The national Japan Rail Pass requires an additional eligible Nozomi/Mizuho ticket for those services. A regional JR West pass does not automatically cover the Tokaido section to Tokyo. Check the exact pass area and train conditions before deciding that a transfer itinerary is covered.

What to check before booking

Check the full itinerary and the exact departure and arrival stations. Confirm whether your chosen journey is direct or includes a transfer, and select the seat and baggage arrangement offered for that departure.

Read the conditions for changes, cancellations and missed departures for your selected ticket. Confirm the delivery and boarding instructions before completing your booking; these depend on the product you choose.

Seats, busy dates and luggage

Nozomi operates with all seats reserved during announced peak dates, including selected long weekends in 2026. Outside those dates, check the current car allocation. Non-reserved travel, where permitted, does not guarantee a seat or let you ignore train-specific ticket restrictions.

On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, ordinary luggage with combined length, width and height over 160 cm and up to 250 cm requires a seat with an oversized-baggage area. Include wheels and handles when measuring. General limits include up to two qualifying items, no more than 30 kg per item and no dimension longer than 2 m. Exceptions apply to some types of equipment. The reservation-free compartment trial does not remove the reservation requirement for an oversized suitcase.

For adjacent seats, accessibility needs or a particular window, check availability before paying. A preference is not a confirmed allocation until the issued reservation identifies it. Read the seat-class guide for layout differences.

Booking and boarding checklist

  1. Search the correct direction, date and passenger ages.
  2. Compare the full journey, including any transfer and local connection.
  3. Choose the available seat and baggage arrangement.
  4. Read the change and cancellation conditions and ticket delivery instructions.
  5. Before travel, check service notices and allow time to reach the correct gate.

A booking email, collection code and gate-ready QR code are different things. Use the method specified in your confirmation; not every ticket works by scanning a phone. Our ticket pickup guide explains what to check.
