Shinkansen Booking Checklist: What to Check Before You Pay

Shinkansen Booking Checklist: What to Check Before You Pay

A careful final check helps prevent the common booking mistakes: the wrong station, date, passenger category or ticket-use method. Use this checklist with the details shown in the booking you are about to buy. It applies whether you choose an official reservation service, a booking platform or a station counter.

Booking-to-boarding workflow. Confirm ticket issuance and use the boarding method in the issued instructions. Payment confirmation or a pickup code is not automatically a gate ticket. English diagram.

Check the journey from end to end

Confirm the departure and arrival stations, direction and local travel date. Osaka-bound Shinkansen services use Shin-Osaka rather than Osaka Station. Fukuoka's main Shinkansen station is Hakata. Tokyo and Shinagawa are separate stations, so search the one you intend to board at.

Check all train legs and transfer times. A route crossing two railway corridors can be a through train or require a change. Do not infer a one-seat ride from a map alone. Leave time for elevators, luggage and any ticket collection before the first departure.

Check passengers and seats

  • Enter the correct passenger count and age categories.
  • Check whether each person needs a separate reserved seat.
  • Distinguish the cabin class from reserved or non-reserved travel.
  • Check whether a selected window or group arrangement is confirmed or only requested.
  • For connecting trains, check seating on every leg.

On applicable dates, Nozomi operates with all seats reserved. Other trains can also have their own reservation requirements. A non-reserved ticket does not assign a seat and may not be an option on the train you want. Our seat classes guide explains the choices.

Measure bags before choosing the final train

On applicable Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu services, ordinary suitcases over 160 cm and up to 250 cm in combined dimensions need the designated oversized-baggage seat arrangement. A rear-row seat or an order note alone is not proof that storage has been reserved. Weight, longest-side and number-of-pieces limits also apply.

If the required arrangement is unavailable, consider another departure or baggage delivery before completing payment. Check special rules for strollers, musical instruments and sporting equipment instead of applying suitcase rules to every item.

Read the complete price and conditions

Check the currency and total for the full party. The basic fare, Shinkansen limited-express charge, cabin premium and any disclosed seller fee are different components. A headline “from” price is not necessarily the total for the train and seats you selected.

Read change and cancellation deadlines, fees, missed-train conditions and who handles assistance. A discount product can have restrictions that differ from an ordinary ticket. The fare guide helps identify the components without treating an old example as a current quote.

Know how you will receive and use the ticket

Determine whether the product uses paper-ticket collection, a direct-entry QR ticket or an IC-linked reservation. Check supported pickup locations and required identification or references. A confirmation email or successful payment does not automatically authorize boarding.

For an early booking, establish whether the railway seat is already confirmed or the seller is holding a request. Save the contact channel and expected issuance instructions. The pickup guide explains the common credential differences.

Check again after issuance

Match the issued date, stations, train, passengers, car and seat to your order. Verify any oversized-baggage arrangement. Resolve discrepancies with the issuer before traveling rather than assuming station staff can change every seller's product. Save the documents and consult the live departure display on the day.

Official sources and travel-date checks
